BEFORE YOU READ!
Please keep aware that I am NOT one of those people who insist about the "What is Anime" issue.. This is just an opinion on my OWN work. That, and I'm curious about what people have to say. So don't hold back on me, be honest, because I really do want your true opinion. AND NO FLAMING ON ANYONE ELSES OPINION!

You know, I've been thinking about this a long time.. With the whole anime thing.. You know, "If you're not japanese, it's not anime"...

Well lets see.. I'm not japanese.
I'm african-american.

Another thing, anime means "japanese animation"...
Last time I checked, none of my pictures have moved (outside of my head). And once again theres the fact that I'm not japanese...

It took me a long time to come to terms with this (try a few years) But I admit. My own stuff isn't anime.

I'm not saying everyone should come to that conclusion, you call it whatever the heck you wanna call it.. But my stuff is just, art... With a japanese influence.

It's something that I myself wanna draw because it's fun and I like the way it looks.. Although I had a conversation with a friend who said that my professors would still see it as anime and wouldn't really take a shine to it... But I find that the truth in my own self..

So in reality I've realized that:
1) My future graphic novels would basically be considered 'comics'.
2) My future animations would be 'cartoons' (involuntary shudder)
3) Never in my life would I want to do anything truely consider "for kids" because I SWEAR some of the stuff they have playing for kids -coughcamp-coughlazlocoughhackchowderhackgag- drives me crazy...
4) ....... What would be #4? o.o


So, what's your opinion of this? Anyone who reads this, I'd love to have a (intellegible) conversation about this... I find it interesting.

Mainly my thoughts on this has been peaked because of when I joined an animation club at my college and the girl said that anime isnt "animation".... Basically she believes that because not everything moves.. So I started watching some of the american cartoons (i.e. Scooby Doo, Tom and Jerry, stuff like that) and I realized that Americans tend to do the same thing also.

She said that in anime, they cheat so that only the mouth moves and nothing else in a shot, or else they use too many still images.

I've seen that alot in American cartoons too. So does that mean those aren't animations?

I've noticed alot of weird random things because of that conversation..

But the other thing she said has really inspired me...

She told me that I shouldn't do "anime" because even though there are lots of details, not everything moves, thus its not truely animated.
And I thought (or maybe I said, I can't remember it was so long ago) that just because I'm thinking of doing artwork in my animations that resemble 'anime' doesn't mean I'm going to do the same thing!

Thus, I was inspired that when I do get around to animating, I plan on animating as much as I can in the scenery. The hair and clothes are moving in the breeze but the trees aren't? I plan on fixing that.. Drapes might be moving but table cloth in range isn't? I hope to fix that..

Whatever I can do, I want to make it beautiful, and enjoyable.. I want to make the visual as good as I hope the stories will be... I want to do all I can....
